Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

8 days

Trek Details

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal. It's perfect for those looking to experience the beauty of the Annapurna Range without committing to a long, strenuous trek. The trek offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks, including Annapurna, Machapuchare (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, and many others, along with beautiful rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and traditional Gurung and Magar villages.

This trek is relatively easy and suitable for trekkers of all levels, including beginners. The highlight of the trek is the early morning hike to Poon Hill for a panoramic sunrise view over the Himalayas.

Key Highlights of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek:

  1. Poon Hill Sunrise: The early morning hike to Poon Hill for the sunrise is one of the most iconic and rewarding moments of the trek.
  2. Beautiful Villages: Experience local culture and hospitality in the traditional villages of Ghandruk, Tadapani, Ghorepani, and Ulleri.
  3. Rhododendron Forests: In spring, the trail is lined with blooming rhododendrons, creating a stunning atmosphere.
  4. Scenic Mountain Views: You’ll have spectacular views of the Annapurna Range, Machapuchare, Dhaulagiri, and Hiunchuli.
  5. Moderate Difficulty: The trek is suitable for beginner and intermediate trekkers, with gradual ascents and well-maintained trails.

Difficulty:

  • The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is considered easy to moderate in difficulty, making it a great option for beginners or those with limited trekking experience.
  • The highest point of the trek, Poon Hill, is at 3,210 meters, so altitude sickness is not a major concern, but it’s still important to take it easy and drink plenty of water.

Best Time to Trek:

  • Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May) are the best times to trek due to clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and great views.
  • Winter (December to February) can be cold, especially at higher elevations, and Monsoon (June to August) can bring heavy rain, making trekking conditions difficult.

Permits:

  • You’ll need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Packing Tips for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek:

  • Clothing: Layered clothing is ideal. Pack light, but bring warm clothing for the evenings, especially if you trek in the cooler months. Don’t forget a waterproof jacket!
  • Footwear: Trekking boots are recommended, but comfortable hiking shoes will also work if they have good tread.
  • Essentials: Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), a headlamp, a water bottle (or hydration system), a power bank, and a camera to capture the stunning views.
